Apple Pie Crescent Rolls

These flaky, buttery apple pie crescent rolls are a treat enjoyed at any time of the day. Fill your home with the aroma of the warm apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and ground cloves filling. A delicious and cozy fall recipe.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups flour (all-purpose)
  • 1 tbsp instant yeast
  • 1 egg (room temperature)
  • 8 tbsp butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup warm milk (not hot)
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Apple filling

  • 4 apples, Gala, (or any other preferred type)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • two grates of nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

For brushing the top

  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Instructions
 

For the apple filling

  • Peel, core, and dice the apples in a small size.
  • In a saucepan or skillet over medium- low heat, place the butter to melt. Add the apples, sugar, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and lemon juice. Stir to coat the apples, cover the saucepan and cook for 5 to 6 minutes or until the juice has reduced and thickened.
  • Remove saucepan from heat and set aside to cool.

For the crescents

  • Preheat oven to 375° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer using the dough hook, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon yeast, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 cup warm milk. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  • Add the remaining flour (2 cups), egg, butter, salt and continue mixing on low until the dough becomes smooth and soft for 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Remove the dough to a lightly floured surface, form into a ball and place in a large greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let it to rest for one hour.
  • Remove the dough to a lightly floured surface and gently deflate, divide the dough in half. (each ball is around 490g)
  • Roll out dough into a round of about 12 to 13 ". Cut into 8 wedges or 16 wedges (depending on the preferred size ).
  • Place 2 tablespoons of the apple filling at the wide end of each wedge.
  • Roll up from the wide end to form a crescent shape.
  • Place on the baking sheet with the pointy side down and spaced out about 2" apart.
  • Brush the top with the melted butter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Serve warm. Bon appetit!

Notes

The crescent rolls can be made ahead and saved in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days,  just heat before serving.
Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon on top for extra flavor.
