Ingredients

  • 360 g sliced oranges
  • 360 g powder sugar
  • water as needed
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves ( or 4 to 5 whole cloves)
  • 90 g melted chocolate (I used semi-sweet)

Instructions

  • Wash and dry the oranges. Thinly slice the oranges into round, circular 1/4 inch thick slices and set aside.
  • Add the sugar to a large, wide pan. Add about 4 tablespoons of water and let the sugar dissolve over low heat. Add 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves. Continue stirring the sugar and gradually add small amounts of water as needed until all the sugar is dissolved. The idea is not to caramelize the sugar.
  • Once all the sugar has melted, add the orange slices one at a time making sure the syrup covers all the slices. Cover and cook them over medium heat. Gently turn the slices every few minutes. Let them simmer until the syrup thickens and the oranges are translucent. I cooked mine for about an hour.
  • Prepare a tray covered with aluminium foil or parchment paper and place a metal rack on top to drain the excess syrup.
  • Remove the orange slices from the syrup one by one onto the prepared rack to cool off and drain any excess syrup.
  • Once the slices are completely cooled, dip them halfway (or fully) into the melted chocolate. Set aside and allow chocolate to harden. Serve and enjoy.

Notes

Try to select organic oranges with a thin skin.
The candied oranges will keep well in an air-tight container in the fridge.
