Best 4-Ingredient Homemade Flour Tortillas

Best 4-Ingredient Homemade Flour Tortillas

It is shocking how EASY and DELICIOUS these flour tortillas are! And yes, you just need 4 simple ingredients that are sure to be found in everyone's pantry. These are perfect for wraps, tacos, quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas – you name it! I personally love using it as a pizza base for a light & tasty pizza. 🙂
I cannot emphasize the EASY point enough. If you have an electric mixer with the dough attachment – this recipe can be done within minutes. However, you can also definitely mix it by hand the old-fashioned way. No matter what method you choose, the key step is allowing the dough to rest after kneading. This allows the glutens to relax and the tortillas to have that malleable texture.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 to 1 cup boiling hot water

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the kneading paddle, add the flour, salt and olive oil. Begin kneading by gradually adding the hot water until the dough becomes soft and smooth (approx. 3-4 mins). You can also knead the dough by hand if you don’t want to use a stand mixer.
  • Remove dough from bowl and continue kneading by hand for 2-3 minutes. Cover dough and let rest for 10-15 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into 9 equally-sized balls. Cover and let rest for an additional 10-15 minutes.
  • Roll each ball of dough into a rough circle, approximately 7-8 inch diameter. Heat a large non-stick pan over medium to high heat. When the pan is hot, place one dough circle onto the center and allow to cook for 2 minutes or until the bottom of tortilla has a few pale brown spots. Flip and cook other side for 1-2 minutes.
  • Keep the tortillas wrapped with a paper towel or tightly sealed after cooking to prevent them from drying.

Notes

  • When kneading, the consistency of the dough is very important. Excess water can make it very hard to work with and too little water make the tortillas tough.
  • While cooking the tortillas, monitor the heat level because too high heat will burn it in certain spots and too low heat will make them brittle and crispy.
